A novel “sound visualization” process in virtual 3D space: the human auditory perception analysis by ecological psychology approach

چکیده
In this paper we propose “sound visualization” which provides a learning process for listeners considered as perceptual systems to perceive “character-related” sounds in a virtual 3D acoustic space. “Character-related” sound represents the most appropriate sound event to be perceived (“read”) even by the visually impaired. The test data (characters) used in our experiments were segmented from degraded images concerning real license plate photos. Multilayer Perceptron nets and sound space processor were used to transform these characters into perceptible auditory textures (non-speech audio) called “character related” sounds. Each “character related” sound perception accuracy was assessed by ten listeners in several experiments subjected to perceptual training and testing sessions. The term “sound visualization” describes the perception process of “character-related” sounds through our auditory system and such a perception analysis by ecological psychology approach. The proposed “sound visualization” was useful for people who have difficulties acquiring perceptual skills to “read” “character-related” sounds. The results show that relatively simple and short periods of perceptual training are enough to enhance listening abilities to classify sounds. Also the results indicate that perception depends on psychoacoustic learning mechanisms rather than simple spatial localization of acoustic signals. Furthermore, the work encourages us to conclude that “sound visualization” is a viable and great alternative for the visually impaired that use computers as communication media.

Introduction: Stressful life and lack of tranquility in modern society, have been serious problems for human life. Environmental psychology has shown that physical and architectural environments play an important role in this, and since the home is one of the most important environments, they try to offer solutions. This study tries to identify the factors that play an effective role in creatin...
متن کاملSimulation, Visulization and Perception of Sound in a Virtual Environment Using Beamforming
This paper describes a method to visualize and localize the sound that is simulated within a virtual environment using beamforming. The use of an acoustic camera along with noise image software as a short introduction to beamforming method is demonstrated. Furthermore, the transition from the three-dimensional sound recording to the three-dimensional virtual acoustic mapping, visualization and ...
متن کاملSelective deficits in human audition: evidence from lesion studies
The human auditory cortex is the gateway to the most powerful and complex communication systems and yet relatively little is known about its functional organization as compared to the visual system. Several lines of evidence, predominantly from recent studies, indicate that sound recognition and sound localization are processed in two at least partially independent networks. Evidence from human...

In order to enable the user of a virtual reality system to be fully immersed in the virtual environment, the user must be presented with believable sensory input. Although the majority of virtual environments place the emphasis on visual cues, replicating the complex interactions of sound within an environment will benefit the level of immersion and hence the user’s sense of presence. Three dim...
